Abstract

|
Two typical cases of Hirschsprung´s disease in a 13 year old boy and 23 year old adult who were admitted to Dept. of surgery, Korea University and treated by Soave procedure is reported.
In the adult the signs and symptoms of mechanical obstruction of the small intestine and Hirschsprung´s disease are virtually identical.
Unnecessary exploration of adult with Hirschsprung´s disease with mistaken dia￢gnosis of obstruction of the small intestine can be avoided by a barium enema examination.
Rectal biopsy offers the only way of making an accurate diagnosis of Hirschprung´s disease.
Recommended emergency treatment consists of colostomy as soon as diagnosis is established.
Experience with the Soave intramural anocolostomy procedure has demonstrated that it is a safe land effective surgical treatment for Hirschprung´s disease. A review of the literature in regard to cause and treatment of congenital megacolon is made.
